I regularly check my guinea pigs to ensure they are healthy. This includes examining their coat and skin, brushing them and clipping their claws. I try not to bath my piggies too often as it can contribute to dry skin and upset the natural balance of oils etc.
Using the mixture devised by Peter Gurney (http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/skinp.htm) I now make guinea pig spa treatment for my guinea pigs. This uses a number of essential oils:
Tea Tree has the following properties - antiseptic, bactericide, anti viral, fungicide, insecticide.
Lemongrass has the following properties - antiseptic, bactericide, antifungal. It can protect animals from fleas and ticks.
Patchouli has the following properties - insect repellant, anti-bacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory. It also has a cell regenerating action on the skin.
Lavender has the following properties - antiviral, detoxifying, antiseptic, fungicide, insecticide anda stimulant for cell growth.
This is an excellent treat for guinea pigs every few months but can also be used to help improve dry skin and if a piggy is suffering from a fungal infection. It will also leave your piggy and shed smelling gorgeous!
I use approximately 15ml for a long haired piggy spa treatment and 10ml for a spa treatment for a short haired piggy.
